SAMPE Recognizes Dr. Leslie Cohen as winner of the George Lubin Memorial Award

Los Angeles, California, May 21, 2012. HITCO Carbon Composites, a subsidiary of SGL Group – the Carbon Company, announced today that SAMPE (Society for Advancement of Material and Process Engineering) has recognized Dr. Leslie Jay Cohen, Senior Vice President of New Business Development and Strategic Technology with HITCO Carbon Composites, as the latest beneficiary of the George Lubin Memorial Award.

“It is my high honor and privilege to be the 14th recipient of the George Lubin Award for excellence in the field of composites. SAMPE is both a technology and talent generator. The field of materials and processes furthered by expert consensus is the well from which the products of energy will flow. This will be the key enabler for a better way of life for the world,” says Dr. Leslie Cohen.

George Lubin was considered a ground-breaking leader in the field of advanced composites for primary structures. In the 1960’s he recognized the significance of SAMPE and ultimately established the first New York chapter. Through his endeavors within both SAMPE and his field, he achieved global acknowledgment. After his death, his many decades of development in the field of composites were distinguished through the conception of the George Lubin Award.

The George Lubin Award is considered SAMPE’s most renowned distinction. It is granted to those individuals who have made important contributions in the material and process engineering industry. The first award was granted in 1986 and since this time, only 13 people have received the prestigious honor. The first person to receive this distinction in more than six years, Dr. Cohen will receive the award at the SAMPE Fellows Banquet on the evening of Monday, May 21, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore. This ceremony will take place during the SAMPE 2012 Conference and Exhibition in Baltimore, Maryland, which is held from May 21-24, 2012.
